The Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Office is only able to provide information by way of certificates and does so following receipt of a formal application. Online indexes for family history research are now available from the SA Genealogy Society.

NEW LAWS TO RECOGNISE FEMALE SAME-SEX CO-PARENTS
In June 2011 South Australian laws were passed to recognise female, same-sex couples as the co-parents of babies. For births registered after 15 December 2011, the birth mother and co-parent can both be included on the birth registration and birth certificate in some cases. For births registered before 15 December 2011, the birth mother and co-parent can apply to change the birth record to add the female partner as a co-parent in some cases. CHINESE ADOPTEES LIVING IN SA TO BE ISSUED WITH BIRTH CERTIFICTAES
The Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Office (BDM) has recently revised its policy to allow children adopted from China to be issued birth certificates if the Registrar of BDM is provided with sufficient evidence of the adoption.
