Codes of practice

Pursuant to Section 10A of the Act, the Independent Gambling Authority has prescribed advertising and responsible gambling codes of practice.

The aim of the Advertising Code of Practice is to provide licensees with a framework to ensure that their advertising is consistent with community expectations that gambling will be conducted in a responsible manner so as to minimise the harm caused by gambling and is socially responsible.

In particular the code governs the –

  • content of gambling advertising; and
  • use of mandatory warning messages (including provisions for radio, television, print media and outdoor advertising).

The aim of the Responsible Gambling Code of Practice is to provide licensees with a framework to ensure that their general gambling practices are consistent with community expectations that gambling will be conducted in a responsible manner so as to minimise the harm caused by gambling.

In particular the code governs –

  • internal reporting processes for suspected problem gamblers;
  • voluntary and in-voluntary barring from gaming areas;
  • venue operations, including
    • in-venue customer information and signage;
    • young children in and around premises;
    • cashing of cheques; and
    • coin availability.
  • inducements and loyalty programs; and
  • staff training requirements

In accordance with Section 47 of the Act, the holder of a gaming licence must not contravene or fail to comply with a mandatory provision of the advertising code of practice or the responsible gambling code of practice. Penalties apply.

All licensees should familiarise themselves with the contents of these codes and advise and instruct all relevant gaming staff.
