Hard hat on a table - the side reads 'Portable Long Service Leave

The Portable Long Service Leave business administers the South Australian Construction Industry Long Service Leave Act 1987.

Under this Act, registration is compulsory for individuals, partnerships, companies or trusts employing workers performing building, electrical or metal trades work:

  • for at least 3 days in any month (each day being at least 5 hours long), and
  • predominantly (at least 50% of the time) working on-site in any 3-month period.

Employers are required to submit bi-monthly returns detailing each employees' wages paid during the period, and then remit a 2% levy based on the total amount of wages paid.

After accruing 2,600 service days (equivalent to 10-years full time employment to the industry) the employee will be entitled to take 13 weeks long service leave and this leave will be paid for by the Portable Long Service Leave business.

Portable Long Service Leave is portable around Australia, with an equivalent scheme in every State and Territory, meaning employees are able to move interstate for their work and their long service leave balance will move with them.
