South Australians are reminded to make sure they are getting the cheapest price at the pump – with more than 1000 fuel inspections carried out since the government’s crackdown began.

The State Government is encouraging people to use fuel watch apps to get the best price and to report any petrol stations whose price on the apps doesn’t match the price at the bowser.

Inspectors from Consumer and Business Services are out in force across South Australia, ensuring petrol stations comply with their obligations.

Since the conflict in the Middle East began, CBS officers have completed more than 1,000 fuel price inspections across the city, suburbs and regional areas of South Australia.

The blitz has so far resulted in 29 expiations being issued to petrol stations for either failing to list fuel as being unavailable or pricing it incorrectly with nearly $20,000 in fines issued along with 24 warning letters.

New legislation has now passed State Parliament to significantly increase penalties for petrol stations who fail to update the price or mark fuel as unavailable within the 30-minute window.

Expiations for breaches will increase from $550 to $5000, while the maximum court imposed penalty will increase from $10,000 to $20,000 in later July 2026.

Under the real-time fuel pricing information scheme, fuel retailers are required to report their prices and availability of fuel to a central database within 30 minutes of changing the price at the pump.

Drivers can then access free fuel price information via fuel price apps including the RAA app, Petrol Spy, Motor Mouth, SA Bowser: Should I Fuel? and ServoTrack, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.

SA driver's using real-time fuel pricing can save an estimated $117 a year, based on typical fuel consumption, resulting in an annual total savings of approximately $58 million across the state.
