South Australians are being warned to avoid conducting business with SA Solar Energy, following numerous complaints.

Commissioner for Consumer Affairs Dini Soulio said Consumer and Business Services had reason to believe the business had been operating without the relevant licence.

"Consumer and Business Services has received several complaints about this business, including from vulnerable consumers," he said.

"The allegations levelled against the business are serious - and range from failing to abide by mandatory cooling off periods contained within the Australian Consumer Law to making false and misleading representations that the goods have financial benefit.

"We are continuing our investigations into this matter, and while we have warned this business, they have continued to engage in work without the appropriate licence."

Mr Soulio said that in light of the serious nature of the allegations, and the business' continued engagement with consumers with no appropriate licence to contract for this work, a public warning was warranted.

"While these investigations are continuing, I would urge people to avoid doing business with SA Solar Energy," he said.

"As our investigations are ongoing, I would also encourage any consumers who may have had dealings with this business, but have not yet reached out, to get in touch as they may be able to assist with our investigation."

Mr Soulio urged South Australians to do their homework before engaging a contractor to install solar panels or batteries.

"This is a significant, but often worthwhile, investment for consumers - but it's important people do their homework before entering into an agreement," he said.

"Given the complexities of both the products and the markets, people should ensure they read up so they know what they are looking to purchase, get numerous quotes for the same type of system and check with their retailer about rates of electricity drawn from and fed back into the grid.

"Due diligence early on is essential to protect what is a significant investment for consumers."
