An unlicensed builder who took money from consumers for work that was either incomplete or never started has been fined $7,500 and ordered to pay compensation of $2,400.

The Elizabeth Magistrates Court heard 49 year old Anthony Michael Cameron admitted taking money from six consumers to build carports, verandahs, pergolas and sheds while unlicensed.

Magistrate Susan O’Connor found that Cameron knowingly operated without a builder’s licence and undercut legitimate builders’ quotes for work.

In each case, Cameron either failed to complete the work or didn’t even start.

Ms O’Connor described Cameron’s actions as “callous” saying customers hadn’t received an apology or compensation for eight years.

She said that there was no reason for Cameron to be confused about the requirements for an ABN or building licence, and his decision to bypass rules and regulations showed a contempt for his customers.

Ms O’Conner said Cameron had behaved “ruthlessly”.
