Using commercial certificate sites

Consumer and Business Services is urging South Australians to exercise caution if they choose to apply for birth, death, or marriage certificates from commercial websites.

CBS is aware of at least one website offering to act as an intermediary agent and obtain certificates at a significantly higher cost.

Certificates are only able to be provided by official government registries, like the one administered by CBS. They cannot be provided by third parties.

In South Australia, people can apply directly to Births, Deaths & Marriages, which charges $69.50 for a standard birth, death, or marriage certificate. A priority service (within 24-hours) is available for $118.

People should also be careful entering their personal details, credit card and identification documents on non-government websites, which may not be secure or subject to Australian privacy laws.
