Consumers are being warned to ignore unsolicited offers for roofing work, with reports of itinerant tradies targeting people in the northern suburbs today.

The state’s consumer watchdog, Consumer and Business Services, has received reports of unlicensed tradies targeting consumers in and around Klemzig.

According to reports, the tradies have been going door-to-door, and were driving a white Volkswagen Amarok ute with Queensland licence plate and no business markings.

Concerningly, the group appear to be using the name and licence details of a legitimate business.

“Thankfully, nobody appears to have handed over any money in this instance – but the fact that these unscrupulous operators appear to again by seeking to prey on vulnerable consumers is deeply concerning,” Acting Commissioner for Consumer Affairs Fraser Stroud said.

“In this instance, we understand that they appeared to be using the details of a legitimate business to try and convince consumers they were on the level.

“I’d urge consumers to avoid any unsolicited offers of roofing work – and remember the old adage that if it looks too good to be true, it most probably is.

“If you’re tempted by an offer – don’t just check they’re licensed.

“Find their license details, independently verify a contact number –don’t just rely on what the person at your door provides – and call that number to verify that they are who they say they are.

“Because while the low costs may be tempting, it’ll end up costing you far more in the long run.

“As with all work undertaken by unlicensed itinerant tradies, the finished product is either incomplete or of poor quality, and often needs to be redone.”
