From 1 October 2023 there will be new requirements for building work supervisor applicants.
What are the key changes?
The Building Work Supervisor Standard Registration Conditions and approved assessment pathways have been revised to include:
- Minimum number of years’ experience applicants must have for each condition
- Recognition of trade and other building related qualifications
- Improved definitions of scope of work
- Work History & Onsite Experience Record (Residential)
- Work History & Onsite Experience Record (Commercial)
- Work History & Onsite Experience Record (Civil)
- Work History & Onsite Experience Record (Specified)
Applicants will be required to complete a Work History & Onsite Experience Record to demonstrate their experience. This document will be part of your personalised online application form. See here for examples of what you will need to complete to be entitled to attend a technical interview:
A new Building Work Supervisors - Supervision Guidance document has also been published which details the role and expectations of a supervisor.
Why are the changes being implemented and what are the benefits?
CBS identified a need to give greater certainty for building work supervisor applicants and the building industry about the assessment process.
These changes provide clearer expectations of the requirements applicants will need to meet, as well as increased likelihood of obtaining a registration if the minimum requirements are met.
By introducing standard forms to demonstrate experience, CBS anticipates wait times for interviews will be reduced, as only applicants who demonstrate sufficient experience will progress to interview stage.
Consumers have the right to expect that any building work performed is carried out with proper supervision and care in accordance with the current building codes and industry expectations. Building work supervisors are essential for ensuring this occurs. Changes to the application process to obtain a building work supervisor registration will commence from 1 October 2023 to support this.
