South Australians can now have their say on plans to regulate engineers working in building and construction.

Engineers play a vital role in construction projects, from research and design to overseeing the building process and performing final checks. Their responsibilities include structural, electrical, plumbing and fire safety for new builds.

At present, South Australia does not have a registration scheme in place for engineers and Consumer and Business Services is working to deliver a government election commitment to create one.

This is an important initiative to give South Australians confidence that such work is being done with the appropriate skills and qualifications.

Consumers will also be better informed and regulators able to take action where conduct fails to meet required standards.

The proposed scheme would initially apply to the building and construction sector and later expand to cover other areas of engineering.

The Government is keen to hear the views of both industry and the broader community on regulating the sector, including qualification and experience requirements for registration and what should be included in a publicly available register of engineers.

Feedback from the consultation will help shape a draft bill to be introduced to Parliament.

Consultation closes on Friday 8 September.
