With the cooler weather already on us and winter getting underway, consumer protection authorities around the nation are urging people to keep safe this winter.

"If they haven't already, many will no doubt be bringing the hot water bottles, electric blankets, fireplaces and heat packs back into action over the coming weeks and months," Commissioner for Consumer Affairs Dini Soulio said.

"It's an opportune time to remember that while there are risks associated with these products, there are practical steps that can be taken to ensure you can keep safe and warm.

Mr Soulio said important safety tips included:

• regularly check smoke alarms to ensure they're still functioning
• check electric blankets prior to use to ensure cords haven't frayed and the blank still adequately covers any wiring
• don't overfill or use boiling water in hot water bottles
• make sure your chimney is clean and properly ventilated before using a fireplace
• if you have any electronic devices that use button batteries, make sure the batteries are secured and not easily accessible.

"These are measures that aren't difficult or time consuming," he said.

"At the end of the day though, they can mean the difference between life and death.
